Question:

>Does anyone have suggestions on what to use to clean a dog’s ears? >Thanks…

i use tea tree oil mixed with water..swoosh it in and let it drip out kills everything and smells nice.. tea tree is an aromatherapy oil i used it on the kids when they had ring worm..and serious diaper rash..cleared both up in one day! later quote of the day: ROTISSERIE: ferris wheel for chickens

My puppy had a smelly ear. My vet suggested using an ear syringe to squirt in some half&half vinegar & water solution.  He said to scoosh it in and out a few times, being careful not to let the bulb create a vacuum in the ear canal, then let the dog shake it out. This will clear out wax & dirt build-up, as well as changing the pH enough to rid the ear of bacterial infections, etc.  Anyone else tried this?? I recently switched from Oticlens (sp?) to "Animal Dermatology Laboratories Foaming Antiseptic Ear Cleanser" for my cocker spaniel. This stuff works a heck of alot better than what I used to use. With the previous cleaner Lady would go berserk after the application , rubbing her ears into the carpet until she made them worse of a mess than they were.. panting and puffing like a wild woman. None of this occurs with the new cleanser ANd it seems to do a better overall job. Anyone who has had a couple of Cockers knows how tough it is keeping their inner ears clean. Steve

Response:

Try OtiCalm. I got it from my vet for my lab and it works great. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Does anyone have suggestions on what to use to clean a dog’s ears? > Thanks… > Kathryn

Response:

I use Ear Cleansing Solution (that is what it is called) & it is a maintenance cleanser.  You can purchase from the Vet.

Response:

Is there a difference in how these two products are applied or in the "ear cleaning procedure" when using one or the other?

Response:

1 oz. Nolvasan solution in about 15 oz. 70 isopropyl rubbing alcohol.  As good and cheaper than any of the marketed ones.

My vet recommended using Fleet’s Enema Solution, years ago. And both of my dogs get theri ears cleaned monthly with it. I take them outside, squirt quite a bit in, rub it around, and let em shake it out. Then follow up with a cotton ball to clean out excess. Lots cheaper than OTC ear cleaners…and extrememly gentle, (as you can imagine<G>). Neither of them have had any ear problems since using this….going on 4 years or so now. MaryBeth
